Approximate Schedule:
7:45am – Sign in, coffee and registration begin
8:45am to 10:45am - What, Why and How to support “Personhood” of individuals living with dementia. Language Matters and the NEW recommended person-centered vocabulary
10:45am to 11:00am – Refreshment Break
11:00am to 1:00pm - Brain changes in persons living with dementia and how these changes affect sensory abilities, activities and care partnering. You will go through the Dementia Live™ Experience and Empowerment session, learn proper approach and communication techniques and make PAC Pieces of the Puzzle to meet individual dementia care needs.
1:00pm to 1:30pm – Lunch break
1:30pm to 3:30pm - Engaging individuals with dementia in activities that are meaningful and bring joy. We'll practice Compassionate Touch® - using the Hand Massage Protocol to engage and prevent distress. Ageless Grace® Mind and Body Exercises
3:30pm to 3:45pm – Refreshment Break
3:45pm to 5:45pm - Exercising compassion with family members and the issues they bring when their loved one moves into your nursing home. Engaging family members in activities and helping them have successful visits with loved ones who live with dementia. Session Wrap up and Evaluation
5:45pm – Session adjourns and certificates distributed
Session Objectives:
At the conclusion of the day, participants should be able to:
1. Have new ways to foster personhood and dignity versus patient hood.
2. Illustrate the sensory changes that are experienced throughout the course of dementia and how these changes affect care partnering.
3. Routinely assess the environment and adjust to support the changing abilities and needs of individuals with dementia.
4. Practice proper approach techniques to positively engage with individuals who have dementia to prevent or reduce distress.
5. Create activities that are personalized and person-centered.
6. Implement new tools to help prevent and reduce distress.
7. Help family members better engage and have positive visits with their loved ones with dementia.
